Some years there are 10's of thousands of spider orchids up to the knees and breathtaking in colour. Western Australia's wild flowers are at their best usually in spring, but they do occasionally suffer knocks when the weather awakens from the slumber of gentle eb and flow.

Pink Lake lost its connection to Lake Warden and the eastern lakes with the construction of the railway line and South Coast Highway.

Commercial salt mining, which began in 1896 and ceased in 2007 reduced salt levels in the lake. With further reductions to the lake's salt concentration being caused by freshwater entering the system through a combination of surface water inflow and increased groundwater inflow due to clearing in the catchment area associated with nearby subdivisions.

Unfortunately government dropped it's support for traditional patch burning in the South West when it decided to allow woodchiping and mining in nature reserves, forests, and water catchments. Patch burning has been practiced for many thousands of years using the behaviour of plants as a guide to the long term average trend, as there is often short term variability to the weather systems. Many of Australia's people, flora and fauna are dependent on grass fires to complete the polination process, combat systemic imbalances, and rejuvinate the soil by releasing key nutrients and carbon.

Life and the landscape are fundamental to the history which every single species are entangled together in, with the stories of that history documenting very real processes and events that take place with each change of the seasons. How ever the traditional owners of Australia have rebuilt many communities, developed new business ventures, reinvigorated land and wildlife mangement, introduced real art to tourism, demonstrating relationships with land and culture continue to be a rich foundation that will continue to show us how to live a truly rewarding and meaningful life.

Nobody completely knows why the lake is pink.
