Iliamna Volcano in Alaska

Alaska. A great land with an even greatest history. Up until 1867 Alaska was under Russian ground. In this year czar Alexander the 2nd sold Alaska to the USA and in 1959 Alaska was named the 49th state of the United States of America. Alaska’s first expedition started in 1741 by Vitus Jonassen Bering and was later continued by James Cook. But in the start of the 19th century many more expeditions followed so as to discover this beautiful land. It is said that in Alaska there are 13 active craters. The most significant and historical ones are Redoubt and Iliamna. They rise above the Alaska –Aleutian subduction zone and are two of the 52 active volcanos that exist in this area.

Iliamna’s activity is remarkable throughout all these years. By having erupted more than ten questioned yet times it is the most active known volcano in Alaska. The first recorded activity of Iliamna is in1741 while the last is in 1953 but the only confirmed historical eruptions of Iliamna is in 1876,1867 and also 1879 but they were very small to moderate explosive eruptions. The thing is that the eruptions mentioned above are the ones that we have proof that they really happened. Is said that, there are much more eruptions of that specific volcano which have actually happened, that are not known in the public.

Iliamna is a stratovolcano, a volcano that is built up of layers of lava and ash, on the western side of the Cook Inlet nearby Lake Clark. Steam and Volcanic gas can be seemed to be released from Iliamna crater and is covered by ice and snow.  According to some specialists Iliamna is built on granitic rocks.

No matter what, we can ignore the fact that Iliamna is a well-known and beautiful view volcano. It is wide known all over the world. Not only for its eruptions but its height also. Iliamna has 5 kilometers height. We can easily imagine how big it looks to a common visitor.  Alaskan people must be very proud, for having such a wonderful natural monument in their country.
