3. San Diego Zoo, California, USA

An elephant topiary marks the entrance of one of the largest and most famous wildlife attractions in the entire world, the San Diego Zoo. It houses over 3,700 animals and it is one of those zoos that pioneered the concept of open-air exhibits. The Giant Panda and the Koala also like it here. There’s no problem if you’re a lazy one either, as the zoo offers a guided tour bus that covers around 75% of the park.

4. Singapore Zoo, Singapore

Twenty-eight hectares (69 acres) of heavily forested lands form what is locally known as Mandai Zoo. More than 300 species inhabit Singapore Zoo, attracting around 1.7 million visitors each year. The Zoo is internationally known for its modern approach to displaying animals in naturalistic exhibits, using hidden barriers and glass between the wild creatures and the tourists. It also hosts the largest captive orangutan colony in the world.

5. Chester Zoo, Cheshire, England

Chester Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the United Kingdom, having an area of more than 111 acres. It is operated by a registered charity and it holds the record of the most visited wildlife attraction in the UK, each year welcoming more than 1.3 million tourists from all over the globe. Among the VIP members of the zoo, we must mention the Congo buffalo, the Blue-eyed Cockatoo, the Rodrigues fruit bat, the Madagascan tree boa and the Rhinoceros Hornbill.

6. Tiergarten Schönbrunn, Austria

This might just be the oldest zoo around and one of the most famous too, obviously. It was built by the order of Holy Roman Emperor Francis I and it saw its first visitors in 1752. Its elegance survived two world wars and nowadays still amazes, also thanks to renovations that took place in the 90’s. It is home to more than 500 species, including one-horned rhinoceroses and Siberian tigers.

7. Australia Zoo, Sunshine Coast, Australia

This 100 acres wide zoo, located in the state of Queensland, is owned by Terri Irwin, the widow of Steve Irwin, best known as “The crocodile hunter”. It is a major tourist attraction in Australia and it also has the Australian Animal Hospital nearby, which helps a lot with animal care and rehabilitation.
