New Zealand , an awe-aspiring country, is practically surrounded by 15,000 kilometers of picturesque beaches. This is why it was a little difficult to select just ten of them to be presented in this article, but we based our choices on tourist’s peaks and reviews of the best experiences they had with New Zealand’s sandy oasis of joy. Depending on where you decide to admire the sunset, you’ll either have to do wit wild black sands, on the Western coastline, or white heavens and smooth waves, on the Eastern edges. Let’s take a closer look to some examples!
01.Bay of Islands, Northland
Discover the hidden treasure of these subtropical strips of wild sand! The Māori culture is there among the giant Kauri trees, waiting for you to explore it. A three-hour drive from Auckland will bring you to 144 islands of untouched white-sand beaches that will make you forget about all your worries. A must-see for those who want to enjoy a cheerful exotic sunrise or a relaxing sunset, accompanied by the sounds of a guitar.
02.Abel Tasman National Park, Nelson
Named after the first European who anchored nearby in Golden Bay, the park was founded in 1942 by an ornithologist, for preservation purposes. Petrels, penguins, shags, wild boars, deer and goats enrich the park and sometimes make their apparition on the scenic beaches too. Enjoy an adventurous trekking session in the forested areas, to then camp on the clean sands of Totaranui and feel the touch of nature over your soul!
03.Manu bay, Raglan, Hamilton-Waikato
A black-sand coastline decorates what is gazzetted as a “surfing Mecca”, also very rich in culture and exquisite cafes. If you have what it takes as a surfer, here at Manu bay you can catch a wave and cruise for entire kilometers. If surfing is not your cup of tea, you can always enjoy amazing beachside walks or climb the nearby Mount Karioi. Kayaking, harbor cruises and cycling the Pipiwharauroa Trail are also activities to take in consideration while on your stay.
04.Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty
An extinct volcanic cone watches over the town of Mauao and its enchanting beaches. Home of the popular Bayfair Shopping Centre, this is also the host of many important surfing and triathlon events. Furthermore, Mauao is an archaeological site of national importance, representing a Maori pa (fort site). Big game fishing, dolphin tours and relaxing in naturally heated salt water pools will make your trip unforgettable.
05.Ninety Mile Beach, Kaitaia
If you’re in the mood for some off-road experience, then rent a quad and have some fun speeding up on the sandy tracks of Kaitaia! You’ll get some spectacular views over the ocean and a chance to immortalize the perfect sunset with your friends. Awesome sand-boarding opportunities and delicious seafood is what you should expect from this place.
06.Tunnel Beach, Dunedin
Admire the marvelous work done by the southern ocean and the salty winds with the stones of Dunedin! Rocky eroded arches revealing ancient fossils will make your walks feel like a journey back in time, while the breathtaking long distance sceneries will teleport you to a state of Nirvana. A beautiful line of high cliffs, in a never-ending dance under the skies.
07.Piha Beach, West Auckland
A very popular spot for tourists all around the world. Rugged green beauty showing off its charming wilderness over a strip of black sand makes of this location a Paradise for nature lovers. Dramatic rocky peaks coming out from the ocean add a final touch to the artistry of the waves. Wonderfully isolated source of inspiration for your poetries, never overcrowded and also a great spot for long swimming sessions.
08.Karekare, West Auckland
Just south of the large beach of Piha you will find this beautiful coastal settlement, still retaining much of its natural beauty and isolation. Just half mile up the valley from the black-sandy beach your eyes will come across the magnificent Waitakere waterfalls. Enjoy some fantastic sightseeing, walk your dog, fish, camp or ride those wild waves! Karekare beaches are also becoming very popular among young couples that look for an unconventional location for their outdoors wedding ceremonies.
09.Whale Bay, Raglan
Quiet and smooth lines drawing the top of the green hills caressed by the ocean’s waves: this is what you’ll get at Whale Bay. A world-renown surfing beach decorated by native trees and a plethora of organic food shops, massage studios, eco-shops and sporty restaurants.
10.New Chums Beach, Coromandel Peninsula
Accessible only by boat, this masterpiece of nature’s art looks so idyllic when watched from the top of rocky Motuto! An unspoiled white-sand beach surrounded by wild native bush, which contribute even more in creating an amazing undeveloped landscape. Totally worth a visit!
