Some consider Waverly House as the most haunted place on Earth and it certainly is one of the most popular destinations in the autumn season, especially around Halloween, thanks to its creepy reputation. It used to be a private school and then turned to a tuberculosis hospital during the 19th century.
2. Rancho Los Amigos Hospital, California, USA
This hospital was founded in 1888 and it started out as a pioneering project in studying and helping the mentally ill. The property also included a farm, a zoo, a dairy and a graveyard. Nowadays it is fenced up and totally abandoned, while a new institute has been founded nearby and now functions as a mental rehabilitation center. The internet is full of spooky images and scary stories about this place, which seems to be haunted by the souls of the patients who used to inhabit it.
3. Part of Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital, New York, USA
Founded in 1912 as the Farm Colony of Brooklyn State Hospital, the now abandoned part of Creedmoor Psychiatric Hospital was deinstitutionalized during the 70s. It had a capacity of over seven thousand patients, while nowadays just a few hundreds per year still arrive here, in the renovated areas. It has a reputation of a very controversial institution, with many reports of patient abuse in its history, thus the creepy feeling you get around the center.
4. Willard Asylum, New York, USA
Many creepy tales circulate around this building, stories of people locked here for the rest of their lives, sometimes for very suspicious reasons. Well, it seems there’s always something fishy going on in asylums, isn’t that right? The patients here had an average stay of 30 years and the ones who died in the institution were buried in nameless graves in the yard owned by the asylum. That’s so very weird and scary!
5. Antwerp’s Forensic Institute, Belgium
The motto of this institution says it all: “Between death and oblivion the body must undergo tests. Before being laid to rest in the tranquility of legality, Thanatos comes to the aid of logic.” A bad-ass location for ghost-hunters looking for some urban exploration adventures, giving the opportunity of taking some amazing horror shots in its chambers and labs, all full of historical medical instruments. Everything here is intensively creepy and certainly worth a visit if you want to have one of the best nightmares of your life!
6. Beelitz-Heilstatten Sanatorium, Germany
This abandoned place seems to be still haunted by its history, a thing that contributes in making it one of the scariest institutions on Earth that you can visit for some shivers. Photographing the ruins of this building can be one of the most thrilling things you can do in Coulsdon. Just remember that if you happen to catch ghosts in your pictures, those might not be just artifacts! It used to be a prime example for the treatment of the psychiatric patients, but then saw its decline, after a series of attacks due to security flaws.
8. Hellingly Hospital, United Kingdom
This used to be a huge lunatic asylum, built in the village of Hellingly, under the order of The County Authority of East Sussex. The sexes used to be separated in different areas, as it was the tradition in institutions at that age. The hospital then saw its decline and closed most of its doors by the end of 1991. In 2010 the front façade of the building was destroyed by a fire, contributing to an even creepier look.
9. Joseph Lemaire Sanatorium, Belgium
The institution had its glory at the beginning of the last century, when tuberculosis used to still sweep through Europe, to then close during the eighties, thanks to the development of new treatments.
